The Lake

When I first moved to Cornwall about 17 years ago , I wrote this post that early Spring.

The experience I had with the Wildlife , that first Summer.

Thought I would share it with you once a again.

We arrived in Cornwall in 1999 a bleak and cold November. We were all still very excited about the prospect of living in the country. The air was fresh and we weren’t  very far from the sea.

The garden had three Fir trees and plenty of mature shrubs and bushes. Around 2 acres in all. Walking up the bank from the back of the house was a Lake, with a large island set in the middle. Very beautiful I thought with a few ducks swimming around. The water level was quite high at the time.

The Lake took on a life of its own that Spring , two Canadian Geese flew in looked around and stayed to have a family. It was a wonderful sight to see , these four little bundles of fluff. Swimming very close to mum and dad. Those little Goslings stole my heart.

As they grew they became quite  friendly and I was able to feed them from my hand, as the proud parents looked on. I could see they trusted me , and we became friends over the coming months.

About the time they were about to leave , the male went into the next field and called them. It took a while but he succeeded in the end, and so off they went.

Well after a few days I though that was probably the last time I would ever see them again. But one evening about 7 pm  I happen to hear them fly over the house. I  rushed out to see them land back on the Lake. I took some bread from my kitchen , hoping they would be my friend for the last time.

Sitting on the bank they came over to me and I fed them once more from my hand. They were very gentle and trusting , and even the big male.

The next morning they had gone and I never saw them again.

This story will stay with me for ever , as that was the first and last time a pair of Geese actually nested up there.
